What is Hoodia?

Although, in this digital age, the question (and its answer) seem too obvious, yet majority of us do not ‘exactly’ know what is Hoodia. If you ask any American obese what is Hoodia, he or she will give you a strange glance as if you’ve come from Mars! This is because the American media has devoted extensive prime time to Hoodia and its characteristics. Though most of us claim to know what is Hoodia, but do we ‘really’ know that well.

For beginners, Hoodia is a succulent plant (and not a cactus!) found in the wild in and around the Kalahari Desert region in the Southern part of African continent. Mostly, the plant is found in South Africa and Namibia. There are about 13 known species of Hoodia plant, of which only Hoodia Gordonii is known to possess the magical appetite suppressing properties.

The advent of Hoodia’s benefits is also an interesting story. The San Bushmen who inhabit the area used to go to long hunting expeditions in the dense forests, and had to wait often for days to catch their prey. In order to quell the hunger and thirst, somehow they found out that eating Hoodia plant actually acts kills the appetite and also helps them in recovering from stomach cramps. And the rest is history. Now, this happened about a century back. But the modern scientists have only recently woken up to the magical qualities of Hoodia and the potential benefits that can be bestowed on the millions of obese patients worldwide.

The clinical tests and trials have managed to isolate P57 molecule from Hoodia Gordonii plant that tricks the brain into sending “being full” signals. The full-scale official launch of Hoodia is expected in 2008. Till then, if someone asks you what is Hoodia, don’t give him a discerning look but try to ascertain if you actually know what is Hoodia.
