The large-scale publicity and hype gathered by Hoodia has led the critics to believe that there must be a catch somewhere. However, they have failed to catch the so-called “catch” yet. If we consider the origin and stories about Hoodia, then Hoodia dangers seem to be an illusory concept.
Hoodia is a naturally occurring plant in the Desert area of Southern part of African continent. Rather, it’s a wild plant that is typical to this region due to specific climatic conditions… Well, no “Hoodia dangers” so far!
The San Bushmen, who are native to this area, depend heavily on wild animals for their food supplies. So, hunting is a way of life for these Bushmen. And sometimes, they had to venture deep into the jungles to find their prey. And obviously, they had to fight hunger and thirst during long hours and days of wait for the catch. Some fine day, they discovered that eating Hoodia plant actually kills their appetite… No “Hoodia danger” till now!
This became a practice and whenever the Bushmen went into deep forests for hunting expeditions, they used to eat Hoodia to quell thirst and hunger, and to their surprise, they also discovered that Hoodia also has some healing qualities, and can fight stomach cramps, diabetes and hypertension… Absolutely nothing about “Hoodia Dangers” here!
Thus, Hoodia became a part of life for San Bushmen. As soon as the word reached the western world, they flocked to the region and started exploiting Hoodia plant commercially without even waiting for formal clearances from the respective governments and environmentalists…Here lays the “Hoodia Dangers”! The dangers are not FROM Hoodia, but TO Hoodia.
Fortunately, the government has managed to regulate the indiscriminate harvesting of Hoodia to preserve the plant from extinction. Also, the mandatory CITES certification ensure that the environment was not damaged by the marketers of Hoodia products.
